Strategies for helping your child read

One of the greatest gifts that you can give your children is the gift of loving to read.  Take 10 to 15 minutes out of your day to read with your child.  It will make a difference!

When your child is reading to you with books that they have brought home, please praise and encourage these strategies:

1.  One to One Word Matching – make sure that your child is pointing carefully to each word as he/she is reading with their finger.  (This is an important strategy with beginning readers.  It focuses their attention on the printed word.  Later, as your child becomes a fluent reader, pointing won’t be necessary, except when reading a difficult area in the book.

2.  Looking for Picture Clues and Meaning – This is an important strategy.  This strategy helps your child become an independent reader by searching for clues or meaning that will help him/her with the word.

3.  “Getting their mouth ready” – This strategy is good to help your child say the sound and pull the word as they break the letter sounds apart and put them together.

4.  Going back and starting over – Rereading a sentence over is a good way to help when your child is having difficulty decoding a word.  This helps for meaning of the sentence and fluency.
